While many couples celebrate Valentines Day with a classic romantic dinner for two, complete with candlelight and a menu full of aphrodisiacs, it’s fun to break the mold. If splitting a Schlauthaus platter and a few liters of beer with your sweetheart is more your style, you will love these off-beat Downtown Sanford date ideas.
Pick any of these fun outings for couples with our Downtown Sanford neighbors (or all three!) and then slide into a seat at the Willow Tree for a truly unique Valentines date. Be sure to let them know who sent you!
1. Salt Room
Sweep your date off their feet and into a cushy chair for some tete-a-tete R&R at the Antidote Apothecary and Spa Salt Room
. Owner Julia built this special space, filled with salt crystals and a salt generator, which circulates clean, fresh air through the room, to soothe skin and clear the lungs and sinuses. The experience, which includes a peaceful 45 minute session of relaxation in the Salt Room, is similar to taking the air on a calm beach, and is similarly invigorating.
We sent Brad and Janet Zeak, our office administrator and reservation specialist, to the Salt Room for a well deserved noon time session. As neither was familiar with salt therapy, Julia gave them a little overview of the history and benefits before they settled into the Salt Room itself. “The floor is covered with large pieces of salt which was kind of fun to walk over,” Janet said. “By the end of our session we had a faint haze of salt coating our lenses and could taste the salt on our lips.”
Both husband and wife enjoyed the relaxing effect of the room. “I had a great time. It was incredibly relaxing,” Brad said about their experience. “Those chairs are possibly the most comfortable chairs I’ve ever sat in.” Afterwards, over Bourbon Vanilla Roobios tea, they chatted with Julia about Antidote’s dedication to harm-free services and products. Julia even mixed up some house-made beer oil on the spot for Brad to take home!
All of Antidote’s products are natural and chemical free, so a visit is a great opportunity to pick up a bath bomb or luxury soap for the sensitive gal or guy in your life. You can easily find a wonderful gift for under $20, and Salt Room sessions are $25 for first time guests. If your date needs to take some time for himself, take it together in the Salt Room!

2. Escape Room
If you are ready to put your teamwork skills to the test, give Escape Artists
a whirl! This interactive experience on Oak Avenue challenges your critical thinking and problem solving abilities as you try to free yourselves from a “locked” escape room, where you must complete a sequence of puzzles, ciphers, anagrams, and codes within 60 minutes in order to “escape” from the room. Each room has a theme and a storyline to keep your energy and adrenaline pumping, and they each have a success rate of about 30%.
Our staff loved Escape Artists! Our marketing director, Eric, who is an escape room enthusiast, called the rooms at Escape Artists “the most detailed, well-designed rooms” he and his girlfriend Jessica have ever played. “We loved the problem solving and cooperation, and the puzzles are really well done,” he shared. (Don’t be fooled by his frown in the photo…he was just bummed that they didn’t solve the room in under 60 minutes!)
Escape Artists features two rooms: Cat Burglar and Horror Motel. Both rooms are deeply immersive and atmospheric, throwing you right into a storyline that will get your heart racing as you try to beat the clock.
Christina Hollerbach solved the game with her husband Matthew, and said, “The value is unbeatable at less than $30 per person. It’s a highly interactive, challenging experience for a couple, and it only takes 60 minutes, so you can easily integrate it into a great date night without breaking the bank or rushing your evening.”
If you and your honey pride yourselves on collaboration and communication, you are going to rock this escape room experience! (Also makes a great double date!)
3. Love Your Shorts Film Festival
Give your night at the movies a Sanford twist as you walk the red carpet at the Love Your Shorts Film Festival. You and your date can snuggle up in the historic Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center and screen short films submitted by filmmakers from all over the world. The films are broken up into blocks by genre, so you can choose from comedy, drama, and even sci-fi/horror, for which you might really want to hold hands! Each block costs $8 or less, and you can purchase a weekend pass to see every film for just $55.
Jeremy and I attend LYS every year, and we simply love this event. Jeremy works at the Imperial on Friday and Saturday nights, so we like to catch the Best of the Fest block on Sunday evening of the festival, and then swing over to the Willow Tree for schnitzel, beer, and music as our annual Valentine’s date. The short film format is fun and unusual, challenging your expectations of timing and flow, and it’s a treat to see such a great variety of films in such a short amount of time. If you love to support the arts, enjoy an evening of culture at Love Your Shorts.
The Festival takes place from Feb 9th-12th, 2017.
If you want to stay in…
